The Director General of Tourism, Marina García, today visited the restoration of the old train station Alguazas to turn it into housing, and for which the Ministry of Culture and Tourism allocated a total of 523,000 euros through the Via Consortium Northwest Green.
Garcia, who was accompanied by the mayor of Alguazas, José Antonio Fernández, and the manager of the Tourist Consortium of the Northwest Greenway, Juan Soria, said: "This new shelter will mean a boost for the town of Alguazas and will revitalize . We must fight to Alguazas to become the first stage of the pilgrimage road to Caravaca de la Cruz Murcia, is a reasonable distance and in fact many pilgrims come here and spend the night looking to continue to Caravaca.
He added that "we must make an effort because the works are completed soon, as they will provide the municipality Alguazas much needed infrastructure."
The building with a single plant will use existing structures belonging to the old station Alguazas.
The project includes a lodge with 12 rooms, which will provide the municipality of between 36 and 48 places of accommodation, a café, toilets and laundry.
It is envisaged that the works are completed by April 2011.
Greenway Investment
Between 2009 and 2010 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, through the Northwest Greenway Consortium, spent more than four million euros for the construction of a hostel in the hamlet of 'El Llano de Caravaca de la Cruz, and completed, and the rehabilitation of the season of light to use it to shelter and conditioning Apeadero Mula Child.
Also were carried out works of adaptation and rehabilitation of old railway stations Cehegín, and Caravaca Albudeite for shelters, forest restoration of the Northwest Greenway between Baños de Mula and Caravaca de la Cruz, and works adequacy Northwest Greenway in the stretch Baños de Mula-Caravaca de la Cruz.
The Northwest Greenway, part of a former railway route between Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz in disuse since 1971, a member since 1999 of one of the main axes of the Red Green and the Western Mediterranean Region of Murcia.
It extends from Baños de Mula to Caravaca de la Cruz with a total of 48 kilometers, journey that has a huge variety of landscapes alternating with areas of arid mountains, pines and almonds.
This European project provides for the continuity of the route to connect to Andalusia.
